The other day a colleague of mine tweeted that he was planning to unload some "baggage" in his life. I metaphorically replied "make sure you don't leave behind your toiletries and undies." As the metaphor played out in my mind I thought "wow, I think I need to unpack this a little more because I'm sure it didn't translate via tweet. Soooooo, here it is :)
So often when we're considering the metaphor of baggage we think purely about the big things in life. The big frustrations. The "major" events that have overwhelmed us and continue to bring the burdens of past hurts, regrets and desired do-overs into our present and future lives if we let them.
But how often do we think about our toiletries and undies? How often do we pay attention to the people and events that have been used to clean up our otherwise funky places in life? How often do we remember those people and events who covered our behinds when we would have been left exposed? When we're unloading proverbial baggage in our lives we must be careful to not to see the people and events that have served the purpose of helping us stay clean and unexposed as baggage. While there comes a season when we need new undies we discard them discreetly and we don't rid our lives of necessary toiletries until the source is depleted and we have a new supply.
If you're in the season of unloading baggage be careful to not discard your undies and toiletries inappropriately and prematurely because the end result may leave you more exposed and not as fresh you desire...
